Sidney Rice was born on September 1, 1986 in Gaffney, South Carolina. He attended Gaffney High School and was regarded as the best wide receiver in South Carolina during his senior year. Rice was also a star on his high school’s basketball team as he led his team to the state championship. In his high school football career, Gaffney finished his career with 138 receptions for 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns.
College
Sidney Rice chose to attend South Carolina as opposed to schools like Florida, Miami, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Syracuse. Unfortunately, he spent his first season as a red shirt after suffering a hyper-extended left knee in warm-ups. In the 2005 season, Rice missed the season opener vs. Central Florida because of a broken pinky finger. Sidney Rice finally got his collegiate career rolling when he played in the second game of the 2005 season and then went on to start the final 10 games. In his official freshman year, Rice led the team with 70 receptions for 1,143 yards and 13 touchdowns. His average of 103.91 yards per game receiving led the Southeastern Conference and ranked Rice fifth nationally.
In his sophomore season, Sidney Rice only became more nationally recognized, as he again led the South Carolina Gamecocks with 72 receptions for 1,090 yards and 10 touchdowns, becoming the school’s first two-time 1,000-yard receiver. In his career at South Carolina, Rice played in 24 games and notched 142 receptions for 2,233 yards and 23 touchdowns.
NFL
2009: Sidney Rice had a phenomenal season in 2009. Sidney Rice in a single game tallied 201 yards putting him third highest in the entire NFL that year for single game records. Sidney Rice ended the season with 1,312 yards putting him FOURTH in the entire NFL. He was invited to the Pro Bowl as well.
Sidney Rice was drafted in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings with the 44th overall pick. He was only the fifth Vikings rookie wide receiver to start the season opener. By the end of the season, Sidney Rice tied for the NFC lead among rookies with 4 touchdown catches.
In 2008, Sidney Rice played in 13 games and earned 3 starts. Over his time that season, Sidney Rice caught 15 passes that added up to 141 yards. With four touchdown receptions, Sidney Rice came in third on the Minnesota Vikings in that category.
