Ryan Longwell was born on August 16, 1974 and calls his hometown Bend, Oregon. He played college football at California for four seasons before being signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers on April 28, 1997. The Minnesota Vikings acquired Longwell via free agency during the 2006 offseason.
