Mike Doss was born on March 24, 1981 in Canton, Ohio. He attended McKinley High School and took carries as a running back for the majority of his prep career although he played on both sides of the ball. As a senior, he had 1,454 rushing with 22 touchdowns at running back and 111 tackles and three interceptions on defense on his way to all-state honors. He spent more time playing defense his junior year as he had 97 tackles and nine interceptions.

Mike Doss’ college career included four years at Ohio State, where he had 43 tackles, one fumble forced and two passes deflected as a freshman. His best game as a freshman was against Michigan State when he had 12 tackles on defense. Doss stepped up his game in his sophomore year, when he received All-American honors from The Sporting News. On the year he had 94 tackles including 73 solo tackles, three fumbles recovered, three interceptions, three sacks, one fumble forced and six passes deflected.

Doss’ junior and senior seasons at Ohio State included a national championship in his senior year. He played a huge defensive part of the team’s run, with 107 tackles, eight passes deflected, two interceptions and one fumble recovered on the year. He notched a big-stage nine tackles and an interception at the Fiesta Bowl win over Miami. He was a consensus All-America and All-Big Ten choice and was named Big Ten Defensive Player-of-the-Year. In his college career, Mike Doss started 40 of 50 career games and amassed 331 career tackles, 228 solo, 20 passes deflected, eight interceptions, eight fumbles recovered, six sacks and two fumbles forced.

Mike Doss played in and started 15 games at the strong safety position for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2003 season. He posted numbers of 101 tackles, 64 solo tackles, four fumbles forced, three passes deflected, one interceptions and 13 special team tackles.

Doss’ 2004 season was marred by injuries, but he showed his value when he started nine of 10 games despite the injuries. On the year he posted 49 tackles including 36 solo, one sack, two interceptions, one pass deflected and three fumbles forced.

Doss came back strong in his 2005 campaign, starting 14 of 15 games at the strong safety position. He posted 97 tackles, 60 solo, three passes deflected, and two interceptions. Doss had multiple tackles in every outing and totaled five or more stops in every game.

Mike Doss was only able to play in 6 games in 2006 before he tore his ACL, but was still able to deflect five passes and pick off two balls. His tackle numbers suffered however, as he only was able to produce 29 total tackles with 24 solos.

The Minnesota Vikings signed Mike Doss as a free agent on April 4, 2007.
