Marcus McCauley was born on September 3, 1983 in Sacramento, California. He attended Rancho Cordova High School and played football at the running back, safety, wide receiver and cornerback position while also returning kicks. McCauley was considered one of the best all-around talents in the Sacramento area as he was coming out of high school.

In 2002, McCauley went to Fresno State, turning down other offers from Oregon, Washington and California. The 2002 season saw McCauley red-shirting, but the following year he played in all 14 games in the Bulldogs season, nine of those games on defense. In 2004, McCauley took over the weak-side cornerback duties in 10 of the 12 games. In those games, McCauley made 31 tackles, deflected eight passes and intercepted three passes, taking one back for a touchdown.

Marcus McCauley only improved in his junior season when he made 45 tackles, broke up seven passes and intercepted a ball. 38 of the 45 tackles were solo tackles, and McCauley ended up a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection. His senior year wasn’t as positive, as McCauley was benched from his starting job at the New Mexico State game. He was still able to finish fifth on the team with 55 tackles while deflecting seven passes.

In his Fresno State career, Marcus McCauley started 32 games and recorded 142 tackles with 8 and ½ stops for losses of 20 yards. He caused four fumbles, blocked two kicks and gained 32 yards on two kickoff returns. The cornerback deflected 22 passes and ripped four interceptions for 78 yards in returns which included a touchdown.

Marcus McCauley was selected in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings as the 72nd pick. During his 2007 season, Marcus McCauley was one of just 2 rookies to play all 16 games and have 9 starts.
