Artis Hicks was born on November 28, 1978 in Jackson, Tennessee. He played college football at Memphis for four years before being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles before the 2002 season. Hicks was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings in a draft-day trade with Philadelphia in exchange of 2006 picks.

His 2007 season is best known for making it possible for Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor to set impressive records. As a guard, Artis Hicks helped rookie Adrian Peterson rush for 100+ yards.
