The evening of February 5, 1921 brought an opening of a theater so magical and modern that it created a buzz around the country. Hailed as one of the finest theaters in the country, the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota was truly state of the art. Over one million dollars went to construction of the State Theatre under the watchful eye of renowned architect J.E.O. Pridemore.
Truly, Pridemore spared no expense on the State Theatre. He made the physical structure beautiful with plastered motifs and velvet lined seats. The temperature was monitered with the installation of a primative air conditioner so the audience and performers could be guaranteed a cool 72 degree environment, even on scorching August days. Even more remarkable was the glass floor of the State Theatre which provide a warm lighting ambiance from below.
Now that the physical structure was ready to roll, State Theatre managers attempted to fill the venue with a unique line-up of traditional to quirky performances. Silent films were accompanied by a pipe organ in the State Theatre's early years. In fact, motion pictures were the State Theatre's mainstay until 1958 when it opened to other sorts of acts. The State Theatre underwent a nearly 9 million dollar face-lift in the nineties to accomadate a larger, more exacting audience.
