The Carolina Panthers are a relatively young NFL team who represented North and South Carolina in professional football. The drive to get the Carolinas a professional football team was led by Jerry Richardson, a former Baltimore Colts player. Richardson was supported by businessmen and politicians in backing the plan, and soon people joined together to create a 70,000 capacity privately financed stadium. All stadium seats were sold out in a single day.
In October 1993, the NFL announced that the Carolinas would get the leagues 29th franchise-its newest since 1976. Jerry Richardson publicly thanked all the ticketholders who banded together to buy stadium seats and avoid funding the stadium through taxpayer dollars.
Now it was time to fill out the Carolina Panthers roster. Dom Capers was selected as the team's first head coach and immediately went to work selecting players to bolster the team. Some early picks include Don Beebe and John Kasay.
With the young Carolina Panthers team finally established, the players won their first game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in July 1995. The team continued to do well for a new franchise and picked up a couple great players -- Tim Biakabutuka and Muhsin Muhammad- in the 1996 draft.
Today the Carolina Panthers have never scored a Super Bowl victory, but have made it to the playoffs several times. The most recent Carolina Panthers season started off promising, then took a turn for the worse when key players suffered season-ending injuries. This bad luck took the Carolina Panthers out of the running for a play-off berth.
